FY2018 Research Support Plan

(1) General Management Group

We organize a symposium to promote sharing information between support providers and support users. In addition to meetings with other coordinated institutions, we hold cooperative meetings with other Bioresource Banks in order to promote further comprehensive cooperation of cohort study and biospecimen analysis supports in Japan.

Principal Investigator:

Kohzoh Imai (Visiting Professor, the head of Research Platform Office, The Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo)

Co-investigators: Takeshi Wakai (Professor at School of Medicine, Nagoya University)
Yoshinori Murakami (Dean of the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo)
Support Partners: Fuyuki Ishikawa (Professor, Graduate School of Biostudies, Kyoto University)
Okio Hino (Professor, Graduate School of Medicine, Juntendo University)

(2) Group for supporting researches using bioresources from cohort studies

To increase the number of cases and researchers for support, we provide the information on available biospecimen, data, and a large-scale biodata analysis on the website. Also we request the relevant associations to provide the mutual link, and to provide our information to the members of the associations by email.
Our support for the cohort study having completed to register 102,000 individuals as part of the “Scientific Support Programs for Cancer Research” will conduct the following:

  1. Second survey following five years after the first survey.
  2. Cancer incidence survey.
  3. Follow-up survey to trace the life and death of the donors, and the cause of death.
  4. Construct a database based on the all incident information on an ischemic heart disease and a stroke obtained from the regional hospital networks or relevant institutions.
  5. Gradually prepare to publicize the data which has been completed the analysis such as medical checkup and lifestyle data of 92,000 individuals, and Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) data of 14,000 individuals for use as a research support.
  6. Continue to maintain the biospecimens including a serum in a long-term safe storage as well as in dispersed stored system in case of a large-scale natural disaster. Demographic statistics are used to determine the cause of death in both J-MICC study and the conventional cohort study (JACC Study). Prof. Wakai and Prof. Tamakoshi are responsible for the above cohort studies.
Co-investigator: Takeshi Wakai (Professor at School of Medicine, Nagoya University)

(3) Support for constructing and utilizing brain resources

We will promote to obtain the consent of brain donation during their lifetime across Japan to counterpart the decrease of the autopsy ratio of the resource collection. To control the quality of the resources, we constantly update the diagnostic information on the website about the application process to take part in Brain Bank for Aging Research. Further, we check the quality of RNA and DNA using RIN and apoE genotyping respectively, and reflect the results to the database. As to expand the Brain Bank Network, we promote to construct the bases at Osaka University and Hiroshima University.

Co-investigator: Shigeo Murayama (Chief Researcher, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology)

(4) Support Group using biospecimen

We support two areas: one is to promote the bottom-up research based on the systematic understanding of biomolecular dynamics in humans in Japan covering the fields in life sciences overall, another is to facilitate the development from the basic research result to the further development of elucidating the life science phenomenon and to the applied research.

  1. Support for analyzing supersensitive molecular pathobiology system using biospecimen, constructing a network among relevant research institutions
  2. Analyzing integrative omics using biospecimen
We will conduct supersensitive molecular pathobiology system analysis using biospecimen and the various omics analysis that require our precise background information for the bio-functional molecules and biomarkers of the applicant’s interest.
  3. Support Analysis, Technique, and Collaboration using biospecimen
We aim to support 24 cases in total (10 or less assays each) using biospecimen.
    1. Collecting and providing human biospecimens (tissues and blood specimen) and its background information
    2. Support for providing bioresources of hematologic malignancy

We aim to annually collect 700 cases of frozen tumor tissues and 1,000 cases of blood specimen mostly from the cancer patients, and 1,000 cases of samples from HTLV-1 infected patients.
We aim to provide 18 cases of biospecimens (50 samples or less) in total.
Pathological support will be conducted by pathological experts collecting those biospecimen with additional information of various tests, and accumulating the analysis techniques.

We provide four educational activities to spread the use of know-how about collecting and providing biospecimen in Japan via website, lectures, and conferences, as well as how to use them to analyze or collaborative research. We also accept trainees in the relevant institutions accordingly.

Co-investigator: Yataro Daigo (Project Professor, The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo)
